Understanding Types of Trauma and How to Heal

What is Trauma?

Trauma is an event or experience that is deeply distressing or disturbing and overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope. Trauma can have a significant impact on an individual’s spiritual, mental, and physical health.

Physical Trauma You Can See

It’s easy to understand physical trauma such as suffering from a chronic infection, cancer, or an autoimmune disease. Physical trauma is generally the trauma that we treat first, however, if we overlook other forms of trauma that we may suffer from we will never be completely healthy.

Under the Surface: Spiritual, Mental and Emotional Trauma

From a spiritual perspective, trauma can lead to a loss of connection to a higher spiritual power and to oneself. This can manifest as a lack of purpose, meaning, or direction in life.

Mental or emotional trauma can cause a range of symptoms such as anxiety, depression, mood swings, and difficulty concentrating. Trauma can also affect an individual’s ability to connect to others and regulate emotions.

Emotional or spiritual trauma can occur due to a faith crisis, neglect, abuse, the loss of a loved one, or any other event or circumstance that has a lasting impact on your mental or emotional wellbeing.

When experiencing trauma, the autonomic nervous system is under the impression that the body is in an unsafe environment. This causes the sympathetic nervous system to up-regulate, keeping the person in fight or flight instead of a parasympathetic, rest and digest, state.

Treating our bodies as a whole, spiritual, mental, and physical being may require a combination of therapies. By taking the time to address trauma from a holistic perspective, we can help individuals heal and regain their sense of well-being and vitality.
